Physical Development
Physical development is one of the most noticeable areas of a babys growth in the first year. Your baby will develop strength, coordination, and motor skills as they begin to explore their environment.
Newborn to 3 Months
- Head Control: In the first few months, your baby will gradually gain head control. At birth, they are unable to hold up their head, but by around 2-3 months, they can lift their head briefly when lying on their stomach.
- Movement: Your baby will display reflexes such as the rooting reflex (turning their head toward a touch on their cheek) and the grasp reflex (gripping your finger). By 2 months, theyll begin to move their arms and legs in more coordinated ways.
- Tummy Time: Tummy time is essential for strengthening your baby's neck and back muscles. Begin tummy time as early as possible (just a few minutes per day) to encourage head control and muscle development.
4 to 6 Months
- Rolling Over: By 4-6 months, your baby will likely roll over from their stomach to their back and vice versa. This is an important milestone in physical development as it helps with muscle strength and coordination.
- Sitting Up: At around 5-6 months, many babies start to sit with support. By 6 months, some may be able to sit without assistance for short periods, which is a sign of growing core strength.
- Hand-Eye Coordination: Your babys vision improves during this stage, allowing them to focus on objects and begin reaching out and grabbing toys. They will start to bring objects to their mouth as a way to explore their world.
7 to 9 Months
- Crawling: Many babies begin to crawl or scoot around 7-9 months. Some might crawl on all fours, while others may prefer an "army crawl" (dragging their belly along the floor).
- Pulling Up to Stand: As they gain more strength, your baby may start pulling themselves up to a standing position using furniture for support. This is an early step toward walking.
- Fine Motor Skills: By this age, your baby will develop better fine motor control, using their thumb and forefinger to pick up small objects (the "pincer grasp").
9 to 12 Months
- Standing and Walking: Around 9-12 months, babies typically start standing independently and may take their first steps. Some may walk sooner, while others might wait until closer to their first birthday.
- Cruising: Many babies will start "cruising," which means they walk while holding onto furniture for support.
- Refining Coordination: At this point, your babys coordination improves significantly. They may start clapping, waving, and even attempting to feed themselves with their hands.
